being present no regrets

“Shoulda Coulda Woulda”

Part of what Mandino tells us in The Scroll Marked V (The Greatest Salesman In The World) has to do with being present, living life in the present rather than the past or worrying about what the future holds. A lot of people are reliving old movies in their minds instead of focusing on what needs doing right now.

Scroll V also reminds me of something else. Ever have this conversation in your head?

“I should have called him when I was thinking about it the other day. I could have because I had time and my phone is always in my pocket. But I just put it off.

And you know I would have called if I had known he wasn’t going to be here today. I guess all I can do now is go and pay my respects.”

That’s part of Og Mandino’s message in Scroll V. Live your life in the present, be the best you can be with what you have and treat everyone as if they were the most important person in the world.

Be grateful for what you have, let your loved ones know how much you care , and never forget to let your friends know how much you value them. Do these things frequently and they soon become easy to perform, because any act with practice becomes easy. They soon become habits.

Form those good habits and you’ll never have that conversation with yourself. It is admittedly easy to get engrossed in the hurly burly and bustle of the day and put things that need less immediate attention on the back burner. That’s why making them habitual routines is so important.

And don’t forget to Include them in your calendar of scheduled actions. I have weekly or monthly reminders in my calendar to call family members and good friends who I now see infrequently.

Being Present Is More Effective

Mandino also reminds me that people spend a great deal of time worrying about things that they either can do nothing about, or which will never happen. Bob Proctor estimates 40% of the things people worry about never happen, 30 % have already happened and cannot be changed, and only 8% are real, legitimate worries.

The problem is that needless worry causes a great deal of mental anguish and stress. The result can be that many people spend so much time and effort on them that they fail to live happy and successful lives.

So when Og says “I will waste not a moment mourning yesterday’s misfortunes, yesterday’s defeats, yesterday’s aches of the heart, for why should I throw good after bad?“, I understand what he says. And the wisdom of “Should I torment myself with problems that may never come to pass? No! Tomorrow lies buried with yesterday, and I think of it no more.“, makes a strong impression upon me.

The idea of living each day as if it is my last initially evoked an image of frantic activity; getting all the things left to be done accomplished, the “I love you’s” said, the friends acknowledged and the good deeds done. And thinking about all the “I should have, could have, would have’s”.

I suppose that’s the reaction of most people. All the more reason to live a life of purpose, know where you are going, how you will get there and who you will take with you.

What Would The Person You Intend To Become Do Now

You will almost never know which of the gifts of another day will be your last, but if you were to know this secret, how would you like to spend it; frantically doing what you regret not having done, or relaxing in the comforting knowledge that you have done your best and will leave a legacy of love and accomplishment?

Think about that when you decide what you will do today. Ask yourself “what would the person I intend to become do now?” If you can answer that question instantly and know that you’ll have no regrets if this day really is your last, you are living your life on purpose and in the present.

The Master Key Part Eighteen and Being Present

Living your life in the present and cherishing the relationships you have with the people in your life are all part of being happy and harmonious. Both are universally desired conditions.

being present attentionThe Master Key Part Eighteen adds another dimension to this idea of being present.  Haanel says each of us exists only in that we are part of the whole of society and in the way we relate to other people. That relationship constitutes our environment, and we know that we have complete control of our environment through the Law of Attraction, the Law of Growth.

There’s more to it than being present though. While I make the point above that being present means you should worry not about past events or imagined future problems, that does not mean you forget about the future. Your focus on the future is on developing a clear mental picture of the person you intend to become.

You become what you think about. But even here it is important to visualize that future you in such vivid details as to be already in existence. That’s the ultimate of being present.

Thought is creative power and its existence depends upon consciousness of, and use of it (Part Eighteen -26-29). The use of power depends upon attention,  the hallmark of genius, which Haanel says can be developed through practice (Part Eighteen -30-31).  To me attention is nothing more than concentration of thought which we have been developing since day one of this Master Keys Master Mind Experience.

And finally in Part Eighteen -32 he says attention is stimulated by interest. As interest in an objective, goal or thing increases (think Definite Major Purpose or Ideal), attention (concentration of thought) increases, thereby creating more interest, more attention and so on.

Action and reaction snowballs into the creation of whatever the mind can conceive and believe. This is focus, concentration of thought, action and reaction and eventually creation of one’s environment, the ideal toward which you strive.

May the Power be yours,

being present
