Social network marketing has turned out to be one of the most popular and profitable techniques for making profits on the Web today. Some folks are earning thousands of dollars in commissions each month by employing this technique, while the others are failing badly.
If you are yet to join in the social media marketing fever, there are number of things that you should know before you jump into this competitive market-place. You can avoid failure if you take some time to learn what it takes.
You have to evaluate the competition all the time and keep track of what people in the social marketing arena are doing. Spy on them if you like but only to discover what they are doing that makes them successful.
One thing you will notice right off is that the folks who standout from the crowd have a presence on every high use social site. And they are active all the time. Social networking is a hands-on, every day business requiring long hours and a lot of training and expertise.
It is not like having a stand alone website. The word “social” means what it says in that they are only effective if social interactions occur. Conversations take place and relationships are established among participants just as in any other setting where individuals get together. The interactions take place online rather than in more familiar social settings.
You’ll frequently encounter the same successful people on the different social networking sites you visit. Because it’s a “social” platform, it requires constant attention. It is quite different from the situation where you passively attract people to a website, even if you are using attraction marketing techniques. The processes involved in social network marketing are much more active.
Facebook is the primary social media site used for marketing although there are many others. I cut a video a while ago that provides some tips on social network marketing using Facebook which I’ve included here.
When you first enter the world of social networking on Facebook, no one knows who you are, so the first thing you must do is develop your online presence or personality.
Be sociable and engage with other folks constantly. Post interesting stuff several times per day and contact 5 or 10 new people each day.
Establish your business profile, your expertise and what you want to be known for. For instance, when starting social networking on Facebook, create a Business/Fan page for your business, and keep it fully separate from your personal profile. It is the rare individual who can integrate their business and personal personae on Facebook.
Don’t annoy your friends with pitches about your business because most are not going to be interested. And don’t confuse your business prospects, or even turn them off, by posting pictures of yourself at a party with a beer in your hand, along with all the comments from friends who were there.
The key is, keep your business and personal life separate, brand yourself as a professional in your area of expertise.
This can be a bit tricky because part of your business presence has to be who you are as a person and what you had to go through to get where you are as a social networking business person. Just don’t mix the personal and business interactions so nobody knows what you have to offer in your business.
YouTube is an awe-inspiring opportunity to earn money. It is currently the number 3 website in terms of popularity and just happens to be a search engine and a powerful social media site right behind Facebook.
There are billions of videos viewed each day, so if you want to become part of the social networking scene, find out how to make excellent videos and brand yourself by being in them. Check out my perspective on how to make money on Youtube here. Below are some key points that need emphasis.
Video is really the Internet’s answer to old school face to face marketing. Do you remember those people that used to stand in malls and demonstrate products, and women who used to have Tupperware parties at home? Well some still do that of course and are very successful at it. Using video in social network marketing is just a modern day network marketing technique.
So if you’re camera shy, get over it. Making videos just involves a bit of learning and a bunch of practice. Use of videos has become an integral part of marketing in this day and age.
All you need is a webcam or smartphone, some simple editing software and a Youtube account. Videos are now everywhere in emails, on websites, in blogs and on other social media sites.

Social media marketing is really a form of attraction marketing. So showing your face in videos and on your Facebook pages, on Twitter and so on, is important. You’ll never achieve success if you hide behind an impersonal avatar, or post an image of your dog!
I never respond to friend requests or other connections if the person uses some funky avatar or quotation. I like to see the person behind the request. Most people probably react the same way. It’s a fact that people need to know and trust you, and a cartoon character just does not do it!
A word of warning**. If you do promote your business via social media sites, you will encounter some segment of the online population who want to socialize too much. That can be distracting and a waste of your time. My advice is to be diplomatic, but keep those diversions to a minimum. You are in business to make money so it behooves you to keep your real socializing separate. Your personal profile is where that is appropriate.
Remember always, that the reason you are spending time on Facebook, Twitter, Youtube and other social networking sites, is that you want to create LEADS. Think leads all of the time. Think private BRANDING all of the time. Always be aware that you are building a business, YOUR business.
Once you master the art of social network marketing, you will be able to create leads on demand and thousands of dollars in commissions, and you will also be able to enroll more people to your opportunity every week, than is generally possible using most other methods. It takes a bit more time, but the long term benefits are substantial.
