What Are You Selling

Napoleon Hill said “The better portion of all sales I have made were after people said ‘no'”. That’s probably true of What Are You Trying To Sellall sales made by anyone regardless of age, gender or way of life. Have you considered the fact everyone is selling something to someone all the time? It’s true.

Who did you think of when you read that line? Like most people I thought of sales people; those who sell products or services for a living. I’m guessing you did too. But really the concept applies to anyone.

We are constantly in the business or at least the process, of selling something. It could be we want to sell the idea we must have that new car, or new appliance to our spouse. We may sell the idea it’s in our son’s or daughter’s very best interest that they get their homework done correctly and on time. How well we sell those ideas depends on how persuasive and convincing we are in describing the benefits of doing what we are trying to get them to accept.

It may take some time but if we persist we can get what we want. We can sell whoever needs to be convinced that it’s better or easier for them to just agree and let us have our way. Remember when you were a little kid. If you wanted something you just kept asking for it. You never gave up. And more often than not, your persistence paid off. Maybe because your parents decided it was just easier to say yes.

But it gets a little more complicated as we grow up. We need more than the self-centered desire of a little kid and that “never take no for an answer attitude” to get something we want.

Selling Is More Than Persistence

Most of us have lost that dogged persistence by the time we reach young adulthood. We experience a few rejections or “no’s” and we give up. We could be trying to sell ourselves as the right candidate for a job we want, or admission to the college or technical school we really want to attend. Or we could be in the business of selling products or services. We might be a marketer selling phone services, health products, real estate or any of thousands of other products or services.

Now there’s two kinds of people who sell something for a living. There are those who are successful and a much larger group who are not. Do you know what makes the difference?

It’s not what you might think. The successful sales people are experts at selling themselves to their prospective customers. It’s not about the features of their product or the wonderful company they work with. The fact is they sell themselves as the person who can provide what the customer or client needs.

Oh they are persistent. They don’t let a no stop them from making another attempt at selling. First they discover what their customer needs and focuses all selling activity on showing them how he or she can deliver the goods. They answer the questions “what’s in it for me” and “why should I get it from you“.

Focus On Selling Yourself

We are all constantly selling ourselves to someone. We can sell anything when we focus on selling ourselves as individuals who are sincerely focused on providing value first, and making money or gaining some personal benefit second.

This is especially true if you’re a network marketer. You gotta be of service first and persist in selling yourself and your product or service as the very best way for your customers to reap the benefits they want and need. But you have to know what that is as a first step.

Rules To Live By

  1. Rule Number 1; Be interested in your clients and customers.
  2. Rule Number 2; Don’t worry about being interesting.
  3. Rule Number 3; You’ll be truly interesting if you remember Rule Number 1.
