How To Control Your Emotions and Succeed at Anything

If your plans include being a successful entrepreneur you’ll need many skills. One of the most important of those will be learning how to control your emotions. In fact being able to master your mind is the most powerful skill you will ever learn.

When I first read those words I thought ‘that can’t be right; after all we become what we think about don’t we?” Yes that’s still true. It’s the second part of the thought and the fact Mandino is referring to emotions, which makes that idea very powerful.

On any given day you will experience a variety of emotions. And the emotions you experience or how you feel about things, situations and yourself, will be different from one day to the next.

Go With The Flow or Learn How to Control Your Emotions

Everyone is affected by how they feel, by their emotional state every day and in all aspects of their lives. However, I’m looking at this from the perspective of someone striving to become a successful business person.

How you feel and react to situations and circumstances influences those around you. If you are in business, the people you want to impress with your honesty, sincerity and optimism are your customers. Learning how to master your emotions will be key to your success.

As Mandino so aptly points out, “If I bring rain and gloom and darkness and pessimism to my customers they will react with rain and gloom and darkness and pessimism and they will purchase naught.” You have to bring sun and joy and optimism into their lives whether you feel like it or not! That’s where learning to control your emotions becomes hugely important.

Emotional Regulation Skills

You have to be aware of your emotional state before you can master your emotions.  It is important to name or label the emotions you are experiencing. You may then be able to re-frame the emotion and realize that it is not the particular situation itself which is the problem. Rather it’s your reaction to the situation which can cause you problems..

You can evoke the Law of Substitution which says you can attach any feeling you desire to any thought or situation. But the most powerful way to master your emotions is to understand the power of forcing your actions to control your thoughts.

The emotion of fear is probably the most difficult one to master. Fear is a powerful emotion that often prevents you from taking any productive action. In a business sense it could be fear of failing, fear of making a presentation, fear of losing money on an advertising campaign or many other things.

I’ve been there. I’m sure you have too. It’s not fun but you must master the emotion of fear by just taking action. You must plunge ahead despite your fear. Take the required action. Just by doing something, even if it does not immediately produce the results you want, will open the way.

Let Your Actions Control Your Emotions

Have you been in situations where you are required to make a public presentation and felt uncertain about your ability to make a good impression? I know I have. What happens when you project that uncertainty in your tone of voice and volume with which you speak?

You see the reaction of your audience and your uncertainty and discomfort deepens!

But if you force a confident tone and powerful volume the exact opposite happens. Your audience responds positively, your confidence returns and you master your emotions.

You will be amazed at how “acting as if” can help you control your emotions and alter your state of mind. If you feel sad just sing a happy tune or go smile at yourself in the mirror. You’ll be amazed at how effective it is.

If you feel inadequate make a practice of remembering past accomplishments.

If you begin to worry about the bills to be paid switch your thoughts immediately to your goals and the financial freedom in your future.

Start your day by taking stock of your emotions and how you feel. Make your actions control your emotions. Plan your day starting from the premise this day will be the best day of your life.

Master your mind. Learn how to control your emotions and master your life.
